Bayo Fund Review – Debate Club
Elevate Young Minds with support from Bayo co-created a wellbeing workshop to support Black young people to develop coping skills when faced with social anxiety and other mental health struggles that impacts on their ability to participate fully in debate clubs.
The project was done in collaboration with Equal Education Chances in Monsall and Kyso in Mosside together with international guests facilitators and speakers and participants came together in a common learning space and engaged with a model of United Nations curriculum as a way of experiencing the joy of debating despite. The participants gained skills, knowledge and experience in debating at a political level, got an understanding global diplomacy, and made friends locally and internationally and went on to become part of a global spirit of Youth Leaders.
The participants then applied their local learning to be able to facilitate a unique trip to France to attend the Model of United Nation hosted by Spil University Debate society.
At this event one of the participant was crowned the best delegate of the whole gathering, and the debate club come top at their first international engagement after the 6-8 weeks of training. This was a very proud moment for the Elevate Young Minds delegation and the Bayo team, seeing inspiring future Black leaders take on their European counterparts in diplomatic debate training in spite of the anxiety that they initially faced.
